Long lasting
Steel roof products have been installed in the United States for over 200 years.
Most manufacturers now produce product with galvalume. Galvalume is superior to galvanized steel in that the steel is coated with zinc and aluminum. The combination of metals gives us assurance that purchasing a steel roof will be your homes last roof.
Energy Efficient
Several studies confirm that steel roofs are the most energy efficient. So much so, that the I.R.S. will allow a tax credit to be taken for the years of 2006 and 2007 for up to $500.00 if you install an approved metal roof!
One study cited is the Florida Power and Light Company study. They built six identical homes with different roofing materials. The materials studied were Asphalt, Concrete, and Steel. As a result, the tests show that a white, galvanized steel roof should save a customer who lives in an average size home approximately 23% annually in cooling costs, compared with a dark gray asphalt shingle roof.
Another study funded by a company called Wedge-It measured the inside living temperature of a home if the outside temperature measured 100 degrees for 8 hours. Results show that the living temperature inside the home would be a follows with the various roofing materials: Asphalt 81.2 degrees, concrete tile 81.9 degrees and steel tile 77.7 degrees.
A large benefit of a steel roof is that after the sun (heat source) quits shining directly on the roof, the steel will shed its heat quickly. Steel should reach ambient air temperature within minutes of a loss in the heat source; whereas, asphalt and concrete retain the heat for hours. The retained heat then radiates to the attic, keeping the attic warm for hours.
Steel roofing is efficient stated James Dulley, an engineering consultant. Particularly in the summer, a metal roof rejects much of the suns heat, which a standard asphalt shingle roof absorbs. This can significantly cut your air conditioning bills and improve your comfort, especially in second story bedrooms.
Strong/Walkable
Steel roofing can be walked on. If you choose Metro shake 2, then this panel is the strongest and most walk able stone coated steel roof in today?s market. All stone coated steel roofs can be walked on but care must be exercised if your steel roof is raised off of the roof with battens. These battens create an air gap of 2? or more; therefore, you must walk on the steel where it is supported by the battens and not in the middle of the panel.
Styrofoam is available to install as a support under any steel panel. The steel panels supported by Styrofoam will allow for walking anywhere on a battened steel assembly. With this technique we can insert the foam blanks in just walking areas or over the entire roof.
Wind Resistant
Steel panels are the best product available for wind resistance. Most stone coated steel assemblies have 8 nails per panel. This gives the roof system extreme strength against wind uplift. Manufacturers commonly give a 125 mph wind warranty.
Color
Stone coated steel products have designer colors available in both solid and variegated colors.A benefit to stone coated panels is that the stone is actually granite with a ceramic finish. The ceramic has great color retention throughout its life. In comparison, painted products like concrete have had major problems holding their color. Painted steel panels commonly use a Kynar paint that is expected to last a long time. This type of finish is common with Standing Seam panels.
